Product Overview

Furosemide is commonly used in the treatment of pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and heart failure. It may also be used in the treatment of some types of electrolyte imbalance, including high potassium and high calcium levels.
It is an effective diuretic possessing a wide therapeutic range. Pharmacologically it promotes the rapid removal of abnormally retained extracellular fluids. The rationale for the efficacious use of diuretic therapy is determined by the clinical pathology producing the edema. Salix is indicated for the treatment of edema, (pulmonary congestion, ascites) associated with cardiac insufficiency and acute noninflammatory tissue edema.
For use in horses, cats, and dogs.
Features of Furosemide:
  • Fast onset of action with a comparatively short duration
  • High therapeutic index
  • Low inherent toxicity
  • High degree of efficacy
  • Diuretic-saluretic offers prompt edema relief
Furosemide increases the amount of water and salt removed from the blood by the kidneys. This excess water and salt is then passed from the body through the urine.
Side effects may include:
  • Hearing loss (especially in cats) after a large amount of injectable lasix has been administered in a crisis
  • Increased levels of blood sugar, which is not a problem for the vast majority of patients - however, a different diuretic may be indicated for diabetic patients
  • Increased urination
  • Increased thirst
