Glipizide works in cats with diabetes to control blood sugar levels. These easily-administered tablets are especially useful in conjunction with healthy diets.
Glipizide causes insulin to release from the pancreas, which aids in lowering blood sugar levels.
The most common side effects include:
- Hypoglycemia (This occurs in certain cats taking this drug. For this reason, monitoring is important. Hypoglycemia occurs in about 15% of cats taking this medication.)
- Loss of appetite and/or nausea (Administering with food typically helps with these symptoms)
Glipizide
Contact your closest emergency animal hospital.
- Keep out of reach of animals and children.
- Do not administer to nursing or pregnant cats.
- Do not administer to cats with known allergies to this or any other sulfa drug.
- Do not administer to cats with serious trauma, illness, or infection, or cats with thyroid, kidney, or liver disease
- Do not administer to cats who refuse to eat or are showing signs of severe ketoacidosis, fatigue, drowsiness, vomiting, or anorexia
- Do not use during diabetic emergencies, including diabetic comas
- Exercise caution in administering to cats with untreated adrenal or pituitary gland diseases
