Product Overview

Mirtazapine (Remeron) Tablets are typically used in the treatment of moderate to severe depression symptoms. Anecdotal evidence suggests that this medication could also be useful in the treatment of certain anorexia or vomiting-related conditions. Available for veterinary use.
Mirtazapine is primarily to treat the symptoms of moderate to severe depression.
For use in cats and dogs.
Features of Mirtazapine:
  • Appetite stimulant
  • Nausea treatment
  • Treatment for moderate to severe symptoms of depression
Mirtazapine obstructs stomach and intestine signals that communicate with the brain's vomit center.
Drowsiness is the most frequently reported adverse reaction of this medication.

Mirtazapine decreases the adrenal glands' secretion of cortisol, but is not a favorable treatment for Cushing's Syndrome (a condition where the adrenal glands product excess adrenal steroids).

If the levels of serotonin in the brain get too high, serotonin syndrome could occur. This syndrome typically requires treatment with a combination of medications to increase serotonin.
The following reactions could be symptoms of serotonin syndrome:
  • High blood pressure
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dilated pupils
  • Shivering
  • Tremors
  • Elevated heart rate
  • General hyperactivity
If serotonin syndrome is suspected, the antidote is cyproheptadine.

When large doses are administered, this medication can cause heart rate elevation or a drop in blood pressure.

Mirtazapine could cause blood cell line abnormalities in the bone marrow.

If the animal has low platelets, leukemia, or another blood disease, mirtazapine may still be administered, but could require additional monitoring tests.
