Product Overview

Re-Sorb Oral Hydration Electrolytes for Scouring Calves are readily-absorbed electrolytes and fluids. This product is an effective and convenient way to increase water absorption, electrolytes, and sources of energy. It controls dehydration caused by scours (diarrhea). It can be administered as intervention at the first indication of scouring, or as a supportive therapy after IV fluid treatment in dehydrated calves.
For use in scouring calves, including veal calves.
Features of Re-Sorb:
  • Easily administered packets of powder are simply mixed with drinking water
  • Great for newly-purchased or stressed calves
  • Controls scours-related dehydration
  • Effectively and conveniently increases electrolyte, energy, and water absorption in scouring calves
Oral glycine and glucose compounds are proven to be effective in treating dehydration associated with cholera in humans for years. The theory behind oral hydration therapy is based on active glycine and glucose absorption when orally administered to scouring animals. Absorption of glycine and glucose has been shown to lead to simultaneous water and sodium absorption. This theory has been proven in scouring animals. E. coli causes scours because it secretes toxins into the animal's small intestine. Although such toxins cause profuse electrolyte and water secretion, they do not have an effect on glycine or glucose absorption. When Re-Sorb is given, the glycine, glucose, sodium, and water are absorbed, causing net water gain and correction of dehydration. When diarrhea is virus-related, the process of the disease results in intestinal mucosa flattening, therefore leading to reduced milk absorption and digestion. Undigested milk makes its way to the colon, and fermentation of bacteria leads to more diarrhea. Replacing milk with Re-Sorb for a period of two days, then re-introducing a milk and Re-sorb mixture, will offer a chance for resting of the gastrointestinal mucosa.

  • Do not administer for longer than recommended without adding milk replacer or milk.
  • This product does not provide complete nutrition when administered alone or over a long period of time.
  • No antibacterial agents included.
  • Ensure adequate intake of colostrum during the first twelve hours for vigorous and healthy calves.
  • Antibacterial treatment is typically recommended for bacterial scours associated with Salmonella or E. coli.
  • In severe cases of scour in calves or cases that require antibacterial treatment, consult a veterinarian.
  • Do not use in severely dehydrated (in shock, comatose, or down) animals. These animals require intravenous fluid therapy because oral treatment is not fast enough.
  • Do not use in humans.
  • Only use in calves.
  • Keep away from animals and children.

Zoetis
The three primary causes of scours and associated dehydration are nutritional deficiencies, viruses, and bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli. Dehydration is the primary reason for death in scouring calves, which is why Re-Sorb is so essential for animals suffering from scours.
Dosage and Administration
Mixing Directions: Add the contents of 1 packet (both sides) to 2 quarts of warm water. Stir until dissolved.

Scouring Calves: Feed 2 quarts of Re-Sorb solution made up as directed, twice daily for 2 days (4 feedings). No milk or milk replacer should be fed during this period. For the next 4 feedings (days 3 and 4), use 1 quart of Re-Sorb solution mixed together with 1 quart of milk or milk replacer. Thereafter, feed as normal.

Newly Purchased Calves: Feed 2 quarts of Re-Sorb solution made up as directed instead of milk as the first feed upon arrival. For the next scheduled feeding, use 1 quart of Re-Sorb solution mixed together with 1 quart of milk or milk replacer. Thereafter, feed as normal.
